Reality Check Youth from Waterloo and Clyde-Savannah High Schools joined other youth from around the state for the annual Youth Summit 7/16-7/18. Youth spent Tuesday and Wednesday having fun and learning skills for educating the public about the harms of tobacco marketing.
On Thursday, the youth participated in a day of Guerilla Activism at Lakeland Park in Cazenovia. Life-size displays of mini-golf, a birthday cake, crayons, an ice cream truck, and a claw game were altered to display the tobacco marketing that youth are exposed to on a daily basis. Youth threw a “13th Birthday Party,” using a cake with candles made to look like cigarettes, to demonstrate that the average age of a new smoker is 13. At the claw game, the candy was matched up with e-liquid flavors.
