The Tobacco Action Coalition of the Finger Lakes (TACFL) attended Ontario County Public Health’s School Nurse Snack & Chat on May 21, 2026, in Canandaigua, NY.

TACFL’s Youth Coordinator and Reality Check program leader, Hali Rockow, staffed a table at the event, sharing key information about Reality Check and how nurses can help empower youth at their schools.
Presentations facilitated by the Public Health Department included timely information on youth, vaping, and how the University of Rochester’s Center of Excellence is approaching the issue. WeLinkCare and NY Trauma Informed Network also provided presentations for attendees.
School nurses shared stories with TACFL about the teens they talk to, and one Ontario County nurse reported that she planned to take American Lung Association training during the summer with the intention to introduce vital programming back into her school. In fact, a recent survey conducted with students at her school revealed that youth ages 16-18 would be interested in joining or being active in a club dedicated to lung health/anti-vaping.
This is what TACFL loves to hear—and Reality Check is ready to join forces with proactive school nurses like those attending the recent Snack & Chat.
Next Stop, Penn Yan
After the Snack & Chat, Hali switched gears and joined a Penn Yan gathering of 4-H youth at a local Cornell Cooperative Extension. Following a fun activity centered around “vape flavors” and an introduction to the Reality Check program, youth participants shared how they were not able to use school bathrooms without having “vape blown” into their faces.
This is why Reality Check is VITAL for youth (ages 13-18) to create pathways for more education about Big Tobacco’s lies, crucial support when making healthy choices with their peers, and empowerment to lead and positively impact their communities.
